A new generation of talented winemakers is joining the top ranks of Burgundy growers and the Wine Advocate is proud to showcase three of them at their "Rising Stars of Burgundy" dinner, part of the Matter of Taste series of events. Alex Moreau is creating sensational Chassagne-Montrachet full of tension and complexity and we will be pouring two premier crus from the 2010 and 2012 vintages. Amélie Berthaut has taken over her father's domaine in Fixin and instantly won praise for her pure expression of Pinot Noir. Determined to put Fixin on the map, we will be pouring two vintages from Fixin Les Arvelets and a Vosne-Romanée. Finally, Pierre Duroché has rapidly become one of the names to drop in Gevrey-Chambertin and though his wines are produced in tiny quantities, we will be showing one of his brilliant 2012 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze as well as a village and premier cru. It is certain to be a memorable evening, bringing the future of Burgundy to the present.

They say that great Bordeaux vintages end in a “9”. Looking back over the 20th century that may well be true. So here is a chance to put that to the test with a tasting of 1999 and 2009 courtesy of the Château Léoville Las-Cases, to many, a First Growth in all but name. There will also be an opportunity to contrast each wine with proprietor Jean-Hubert Delon’s other Saint Julien estate, Clos du Marquis from the same vintages. One of the most underrated wines on the Left Bank, it will be fascinating to see how they compare. Pierre Graffeuille, who works alongside Jean-Hubert, will be on hand to offer his own insights, plus Bordeaux reviewer Neal Martin, who has been visiting the estate for almost 20 years.

Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin is celebrating a decade at the helm of one of the most prestigious Bordeaux estates, Château Mouton-Rothschild. So now is a perfect moment to look back at his work at this famous First Growth with a mouth-watering vertical of all the vintages under his tenure, from the revered 2005 vintage up to and including the 2015 - an almost unheard-of opportunity for attendees to taste a barrel sample of a First Growth outside the region. It represents a unique chance to compare and contrast vintages with insights from the Philippe himself, who has overseen construction of a brand new state-of-the-art winery and steered the property to ever-greater heights. Italian Editor Monica Larner hosts an exclusive dinner with select wines representing the best of Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions. The wines poured at the dinner showcase the farming conditions found in three distinct quadrants of the Montalcino appellation and include some of the best vintages recorded recently including 2006, 2007 and 2010 (that produced three RP 100-point wines).

Released five years after the harvest in the case of Brunello di Montalcino and six years later in the case of Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, this bold Tuscan red carefully undergoes a longer aging period than any other Italian wine before its commercial release. Brunello is a pure expression of Sangiovese made with a unique clone that exhibits distinctive elegance, depth and intensity. It is one of Italy’s most cellar-worthy wines and can age for twenty years or more. In weak vintages, the finicky Sangiovese grape can be hit or miss. In the best vintages, however, Brunello di Montalcino is an unforgettable protagonist of Vino Italiano.

The Best of Brunello di Montalcino Dinner menu is presented by Theo Randall restaurant:

Risotto con funghi - risotto with Chanterelle and Porcini mushrooms, parsley and parmesan

Pian dell’Orino
2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante (RP 97)

2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (RP 99)

To say that the wines of Mt. Etna are now enjoying a moment of explosive popularity would not be hyperbole. Sicily’s dangerously active volcano sets the stage for one of the most exciting up-and-coming wine regions in Italy. A flurry of new acquisitions, careful vineyard renewals and the sheer energy generated by a band of enthusiastic garagiste winemakers is putting the mighty mountain on the world enological map.

Italian Editor Monica Larner hosts a special dinner with some of her favorite Etna wines. This personal selection represents what she considers to be the best of indigenous grapes Nerello Mascalese (for red wines) and Carricante (for white wines) that dominate the Etna landscape. The dinner tasting also guides us through some of the most important Contrade, or single-vineyard sites, that are today behind Etna’s most memorable expressions. Join us to taste through the excellent wines from a volcano on the verge.

"Of all my visits around Victoria this time, Giaconda was one of the most fascinating and rewarding... because the wines are so mind-blowingly good."
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Advocate

Our Editor-in-Chief and Reviewer for Australia, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, hosts this very special dinner featuring the wines of Giaconda at celebrated chef Marcus Wareing’s The Gilbert Scott restaurant at London’s St. Pancras.

Since 1982, Giaconda’s owner and winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner has been crafting incredible wines in Beechworth, Australia in the foothills of the North-East Victorian Alps. The unique terroir and impeccable attention to detail at this estate are the cornerstones of quality here. Accordingly, the scale of production at Giaconda is tiny, with just 4 hectares planted and at a total production of around 2,500 dozen bottles.

This intimate dinner features verticals of the Estate Chardonnay, the Warner Vineyard Shiraz and the very rare opportunity to taste the Giaconda Nebbiolo. Giaconda is most famous amongst Australia wine lovers for its extraordinary Chardonnay, which ranks not only amongst the best examples of this grape in Australia, but in the world. Crafted using traditional Burgundian methods, intensity, finesse and layers of complexity are among the attributes that define this icon. Less well known perhaps is the compelling, single vineyard Warner Shiraz. Always elegant, wonderfully age-worthy and a perfect example of Kinzbrunner’s reverence for subtlety and harmony over monolithic power, this is truly an Aussie Shiraz preconception-busting wine. And for those who think great Nebbiolo cannot be produced outside of Piedmont, the seldom seen Giaconda Nebbiolo featured at this dinner is a must-try!

Paired with a menu of impeccably prepared, classic British cuisine, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience such a comprehensive line-up of many of Giaconda’s wines is not to be missed. But please hurry and secure your seat – places in The Gilbert Scott Private Dining room for this event are strictly limited with only 18 places available.

Two ancient, truly magical Australian vineyards are brought together to be experienced side-by-side in this one remarkable dinner. Our Editor-in-Chief and Reviewer for Australia, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, hosts this very exclusive dinner featuring the wines of Henschke at the spectacular La Pont de La Tour restaurant at London’s Shad Thames.

It must be said, this is a dream dinner for Perrotti-Brown to host, as a long-standing admirer of these two historically significant vineyards. The vines for these extraordinary Henschke wines are amongst the oldest vines still in production in the world, dating as far back as the 1860s. The first ‘single vineyard’ bottling of Henschke’s Hill of Grace Shiraz was done by the late Cyril Henschke, in 1958. Something of a visionary, his concept was to move away from fortified wine production, as was popular in his time, and focus on the development of single vineyard wines – first Mount Edelstone, in 1952, followed by Hill of Grace six years later. But if Cyril was the idea-man behind Hill of Grace’s rise to glory, his son Stephen and daughter-in-law Prue have to be credited for the hard graft behind the execution of its continual improvement and intrinsic greatness today. The amount of research, experimentation, massal selection, plantings and improvements instilled by this dynamic duo is simply astounding. Their current positions as caretakers for the Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone vineyard national treasures are taken very seriously, including painstaking changes amongst these fragile vines in order to keep this living history alive. As a result, the wines produced over the last 20 have been, in many ways, better than ever.

Paired with a menu of impeccably prepared, traditional yet innovative French cuisine, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience this specially selected line-up of Henschke’s wines is not to be missed. But please hurry and secure your seat – places in the La Pont de La Tour Private Dining room for this event are strictly limited with only 26 places available.
