Stephan, born 1967 in Düsseldorf, is a German journalist who began to specialize in wine in 1999/2000 after a decade of studying and teaching theatre science at Münch University in the morning and selling wine in a wine shop in the afternoon. Initially he wrote about theatre and music but after the translation of Oz Clarke's Wine Encyclopedia, Stephan started to write about wine daily for sueddeutsche.de, the online platform of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Stephan has since published numerous articles for renowned daily and weekly German newspapers such as Süddeutsche Zeitung and Welt am Sonntag as well as for monthly German, Austrian, and Swiss wine and lifestyle magazines such as Der Feinschmecker, Falstaff, and Fine – das Weinmagazin. In 2008 Stephan became chief editor of the Swiss/German newsletter Weinwisser; four years later he took the same position at Vinum, whose 10 issues per year are published in Zurich/Switzerland but distributed also in Germany and Austria. Besides this he has contributed to The World of Fine Wine regularly since 2004. Stephan covers the wine regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as Alsace, Champagne and the Loire valley.
Benoit Tarlant
Winemaker
12th generation and present day winemaker Benoit Tarlant, whose father Jean-Mary Tarlant was president of the Institut Technique Viticole, has already established his mark on the house style, by adding two non-dosage cuvees (NV and rose) as well as two terroir-driven small parcel wines to an otherwise traditional yet already low-dosage range of champagnes. Tarlant champagnes are well-structured and precise wines with great aromatics and flavours. Tarlant Brut Zero is literally quite breathtaking and sold ‘by the coupe’ in trendy eating spots in Reims, heart of Champagne. Benoit was recently joined in the family business by his younger sister Melanie, so its still very much a family affair. Melanie takes care of communciation (find them on twitter and on facebook) whilst Benoit takes care of winemaking – everyone agrees it’s a dream team.
Delphine Brulez
Winemaker & Owner
Delphine Brulez, the winemaker and owner of Louise Brison who has a master’s degree in enology (Dijon), runs a domaine growing grapes for generations, and located ten kilometers from Burgundy, which is fitting because Brison has a much more Burgundian approach to winemaking than they have any relation to the large Champagne marketing houses of Reims. The “Burgundian” approach extends from the manual tilling of the lands with strict yield control and plot management, as well as to the careful usage of traditional Burgundy barrels in close collaboration with barrel maker Damy in Meursault. Biodyamic practices resulting in almost sulphite free wines have have earned them accolades from “Vin & Santé” magazine. Hardly a few hundred bottles are released of the “Hugh de Payen” barrel fermented reserves which have matured at least 5 years before degorgeage and spend additional years of maturation before release. The ensuing balance, complex aromatic expression, and great ageing potential of these reserves make them amazing wines to be paired with food similarly to great Burgundy whites.
Erick de Sousa
Owner
Erick, took over the family business at the age of just 25 in 1988.Today Erick runs the business with his wife Michelle. Their eldest daughter, Charlotte, looks after most of the export sales, whilst their younger daughter Julie and son Valentin will join the business after completing their studies. The estate has grown from 3 hectares in 1988 to 12 hectares today and sales have gone from just 30,000 bottles to 100,000 bottles, 60% of which are exported. Awards and medals galore have been won along the way as well as the respect of some of the world’s leading wine experts.
