Luis Gutiérrez
Wine Advocate Reviewer
Luis Gutiérrez comes from an IT background with over two decades of experience working for a large multinational company in Madrid, sharing his free time between his family and wine. He lives in the Spanish capital with his British-Irish-Italian wife and their three children. He's a founding member of elmundovino.com, the dean and most prestigious wine website published in Spanish, where he has written and tasted since its creation in the year 2000. He also writes for other publications belonging to the El Mundo newspaper in Spain as well as contributing to different wine and gastronomy publications in Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the UK. Awarded the title Cavaleiro da Confraria do Vinho do Porto in 2004, Port and Douro being some of his favourite regions and wines as he writes about what is happening in the wine world in Spain and Portugal, with occasional articles on Burgundy, Rhône, German Riesling, Champagne or other classic regions in Europe. He writes locally about foreign wines, and abroad mainly about Spanish wines. Luis contributed to most of the Spanish entries for the 2008 book 1001 Wines You Must Try (or Taste, depending on country) Before You Die. He is also one of the co-authors of The Finest Wines of Rioja and Northwest Spain published in 2011 in the UK and US and in 2012 in Japan, which won the 2011 André Simon Special Commendation Award in London. He's been the Spanish specialist correspondent for Jancisrobinson.com since May 2011 and received the Spanish National Gastronomy Award for journalism in November 2012 from the Spanish Minister for Tourism. And more than anything, he enjoys learning about wine, the wine people and places, travelling, tasting, reading, writing, eating and drinking and especially sharing great food and great bottles with friends whenever there's a good excuse for it!
Telmo Rodriguez
Winemaker & Owner
Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s pioneer winemakers, advocating native grape varietals tied to the climates and conditions of their sites, and making world-class wines from undiscovered as well as known regions. Perhaps most impressive, while Telmo Rodriguez makes rare and limited wines of astonishing character and quality, his everyday wines have been equally praised, and widely recognized for the tremendous value they offer. Telmo studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux and was the winemaker at his family winery in Rioja, Remelluri, and then set off on his own in the early 1990s to discover new vineyards and regions all around Spain.
Sara Perez Ovejero
Winemaker
In 1996, after finishing her degree in Biology, Sara Pérez decided to return to the wine region of Priorat as a winemaker. There, under her father’s guidance, she took part in that year’s harvest and started the adventure in the « Cims de Porrera » winery. Since then not only she has established herself in the Priorat county but also has been advising world renowned wineries especially on the subject of recovering the forgotten varieties. In 1999, jointly with her partner René Barbier, she launched the organically grown Venus La Universal wine which effectively has become her trade mark.

Description

Wine Advocate reviewer Luis Gutiérrez presents his first solo book: The New Vignerons, A New Generation of Spanish Winegrowers. This cutting edge tasting will take you in 14 wines through the amazing landscape of Spanish wine regions from the Canary Islands to Jerez, Rioja, Galicia, Priorat or Ribera del Duero, and introduce some of the most talented growers and their craft. Some of the wines produced in hardly a few hundred cases will highlight indigenous grape varieties, some being almost forgotten, traditional techniques such as amphorae ageing, and an array of styles from "liquid granite" to Mediterranean characters.

Each participant will receive a personally signed copy of Luis' book.
